Germany always attracts us and we want to do a separate tour, especially for Germany to cover all the major cities. Initially, we did not have any plan to visit Frankfurt as we had a separate plan to cover Germany and Italy. During our last Europe tour, we wanted to go to Zurich, Switzerland from Brussels, Belgium. As the travel time was 8-10 hours, we did not want to spend the whole day on the train with our kids. It was a loss of a day. So we split our journey into smaller ones and added one more city to our itinerary and that was Frankfurt in Germany. In that way, we could visit one more new city as well as have enough rest before reaching Zurich. Here is the itinerary for Frankfurt in a Day.
How to go to Frankfurt from Belgium
We had an immense experience after spending the whole day in Bruges, Belgium. We have gathered a lifetime of experience and we always recommend Bruges to anyone who is planning a Europe tour. After the actioned-packed day in Bruges, there was a good night’s sleep in our hotel in Brussels. It was only 3 hour journey from Brussels to Frankfurt. We had our train at around 9.30 in the morning, so we left our hotel at 9 pm after taking our breakfast.
Where to stay in Frankfurt
It was a pleasant journey on Deutsche Bahn (DB) train. We booked a hotel very near to the Frankfurt main station as it was easy for our travel and all the places we wanted to visit is walkable distance from our hotel. After checked into our hotel in Frankfurt at around 1 pm, we found a good Indian restaurant near our hotel. After that, we were ready to explore Frankfurt.
1 Day in Frankfurt Germany Itinerary
- Walk near the European Central bank and around the Financial district
- Römerberg and the town hall
- The famous bridge of Frankfurt – Eiserner Steg
- Walking along the Main river
- Visiting a Museum
- Sachsenhausen
1. Walk near the European Central bank and around the Financial district:
We stayed within 200 m of the Frankfurt Main station. After having our lunch, we were ready to complete the above itinerary and our first destination was walking around the Financial District. It was on our way to Römerberg. It was a 10-minute walk from our hotel. You will find a giant Euro sign. Most of Germany’s banking headquarters are here. It is also home to the European Central Bank (ECB), the central banking authority of the Eurozone. Unlike other European cities, Frankfurt is famous for tall skyscrapers.
2. Römerberg and the town hall:
Your Frankfurt tour will not be complete until you visit Römerberg, in other words, “Roman Mountain”. It is a historical marketplace in the heart of the old town. This place is renowned for its half-timbered houses and the town hall. Römerberg must be in your 1 day in Frankfurt Germany itinerary.
3. The famous bridge of Frankfurt – Eiserner Steg:
After spending a wonderful time in the town hall area and having a cup of coffee in a local restaurant, we were ready to walk towards Sachsenhausen through the Eiserner Steg bridge. It is the most famous bridge in Frankfurt. It is a walking bridge on the river Main that connects to sides of the river. You can enjoy the view of the city standing in the middle of the bridge. It is also famous for the sunset.
Besides the great view, interestingly, you can find lots of locks attached to the bridge but we have found similar bridges with lots of locks hanging in Paris and Zurich. You can also enjoy music played by the musicians on the bridge.
4. Walking along the Main river (1 day in Frankfurt Germany itinerary):
It is also a good idea to spend some time sitting by the river, taking some photographs. We have seen parks, playing area beside the river and children can enjoy there and spend some time and rest.
5. Visiting a Museum (1 day in Frankfurt Germany itinerary):
There are many museums near the Eiserner Steg bridge, you can visit one if you have time. When we reached there, those were already closed as most of the museums close at 6 PM.
6. Sachsenhausen (1 day in Frankfurt Germany itinerary):
Sachsenhausen is a historic neighbourhood located along the south bank of the Main River. From Römerberg, it is a 15 minutes’ walk crossing the Eiserner Steg bridge. There are cobblestoned streets and half-timbered houses. This place is well-known for Apfelwein, Frankfurt’s own apple wine.
You can enjoy a long day during summer as you have your day till 9-10 pm. Summer is the best time to roam around in Europe. After spending some time in Sachsenhausen, it was time to return to our hotel. It was a half an hour’s walk to our hotel. We had our dinner in a local restaurant in Sachsenhausen and after that, we spent some time beside the river Main. It was an enjoyable walk and we reached our hotel by 10 pm. It was the time to have some rest to restore energy for our next destination, Zurich.
