We decided to swap the hustle and bustle of Glasgow for a relaxing yet action-packed getaway to Ayr. Just an hour’s drive from the city, Ayr is the perfect weekend getaway from Glasgow for a quick escape, offering a mix of coastal charm, family-friendly activities, and stunning scenery. Here’s how we spent our weekend in this lovely seaside town.

Friday: Beginning of our Weekend Getaway from Glasgow
Our adventure started on a Friday afternoon at around 3:30 PM, heading towards Craig Tara, a popular holiday park in Ayr, our home for the weekend. The drive was smooth, and within an hour, we arrived at our weekend retreat, ready for a relaxing yet fun-filled escape with family and friends. The excitement was instant: the park buzzed with energy, from kids racing to the pools to couples sipping drinks with sunset views. We enjoyed ourselves till late at night at the entertainment area with live music, and different options of foods and drinks.

Saturday: Beaches, Burns & Swimming Pool
Morning caffeine fix secured, we hit Ayr Beach first. The golden sand stretched empty, the North Atlantic breeze whipping through our hair as we hunted for sea glass. I have seen such a beautiful beach after a long time. I can easily compare this beach with Goa, India. The only difference is this one is much less crowded. Next up: the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum, where Scotland’s poetic legend came to life. After having our lunch we spent our afternoon in the pool and later at the entertainment area.
Sunday: Sunset Goodbyes
We spent our Sunday in the holiday park after spending the morning at the beach. Kids enjoyed a lot playing different types of games. As all good things must come to an end, our weekend at Ayr wrapped up on Sunday night. Althought our resort was booked till Monday morning, but we decided to leave on Sunday night. After a delightful dinner, we started our journey back home at around 11 PM, carrying with us wonderful memories of a rejuvenating weekend well spent.

Ayr – Weekend Getaway from Glasgow: Three Days of Fun and Relaxation
We spent three wonderful days in Ayr, immersing ourselves in the beauty and tranquillity of this charming coastal town. From the moment we arrived, Ayr welcomed us with its calm and inviting ambience. The highlight of our stay was undoubtedly the beach – crystal clear waters, soft golden sands, and, most importantly, very few crowds. It felt like having our little piece of paradise.
Luckily, the weather was just perfect – neither too hot nor too cold—making it ideal for long strolls along the shore, sandcastle-building sessions with kids, and simply soaking in the breathtaking views of the coastline, spending many hours at the beach in a t-shirt and shorts.
Craig Tara itself offered a plethora of activities. From exciting indoor entertainment to outdoor adventures, there was never a dull moment.
Why Ayr Wins the Weekend Game
- No-fuss distance: An hour from Glasgow = more playtime, and less traffic.
- Mood-booster scenery: Beaches for zen, crystal clear waters, soft golden sands.
- Craig Tara’s secret sauce: It’s like a cruise ship on land—endless entertainment under one roof.
Ayr delivers that proper getaway feeling without the hassle. We returned sun-kissed, slightly hoarse from singing, and already plotting a return trip – maybe next time with bikes for the Ayrshire Coastal Path.
