Setting Off: The Start of the Road Trip from Glasgow

We took the below road as shown in the map through Milangave, a gateway to the peaceful countryside that lies just outside Glasgow. With every mile, the urban landscape gave way to lush greenery and expansive views. The anticipation built as we approached Helensburgh, where the shimmering waters of the River Clyde promised a delightful coastal retreat.

Helensburgh: The Perfect First Stop

Arriving in Helensburgh, we were greeted by a classic Victorian seaside ambience. Our first stop was the waterfront promenade, where we took a leisurely stroll, enjoying the invigorating sea breeze and stunning estuary views. Our kids wanted to play outside, but as it was chilling cold outside we preferred to sit inside our car while having our coffee and enjoying the beautiful scenery.

If you are visiting a seaside town, then fish and chips are a must. There are many shops near the car park. We took fish and chips and ice creams for us from one of the shops. We enjoyed walking along the road by the sea and it was time to go back home. Instead of going back home the same way, we decided to go further up along the sea and took another road.

Coastal Views: Helensburgh to Faslane and Ardmay

From Helensburgh, the road hugs the coastline as it leads toward Faslane. This section of the trip was a visual feast, offering panoramic views of the Clyde estuary and the rugged beauty of Scotland’s west coast. Faslane, known for its naval base, is also surrounded by peaceful, scenic landscapes that make the drive worth it.

Continuing onward, Ardmay welcomed me with its lush forests and views of Loch Long. This area is ideal for those seeking a moment to connect with nature, and it’s hard to resist the urge to stop and explore its tranquil surroundings. We observed a big ship there.

Reaching Tarbet: A Loch Lomond Gem

The next leg of our road trip from Glasgow brought me to Tarbet, a small village perched on the edge of Loch Lomond. By the time we arrived, the sun was beginning to set, painting the sky with golden hues that reflected on the loch’s calm waters. We paused here to take in the serene beauty of Loch Lomond, its stillness providing the perfect end to a day of scenic exploration.

The Return Journey

As twilight descended, we asked Google Maps to give us directions to our home. That portion of the road was a bit scary as the road was very narrow with sharp bends and no traces of habitation. But after driving for 20-25 minutes, we reached a wide road passed by Loch Lomond. The soft glow of the moonlight on the hills and water made the drive back to Glasgow just as magical as the journey out. It was the perfect opportunity to reflect on the beauty of the Scottish landscape and the joy of a spontaneous road trip.
